This weekend we see the triumphal return of the famed TWO PADDOCKS TOP 10 music charts.
We ask friends , family and staff to make a list of their all time favourites.
Sometimes the odd famous person turns up , and we start this way with a bang , with the great
JEFF GOLDBLUM !
Yes , the same funny guy , Band leader , Actor and consummate Musician we all know and love so well .
Here he is , arpeggios and all , cool as a cool cat can be , hepdaddying all the way from Italy no less, with style , flair and a comprehensive, encyclopaedic even, knowledge of That Great American music form - JAZZ . What a Top 10!. What a restart for TP !!
Welcome Jeff - did we ever have a cooler DJ ? We think not ! Crank up the volume and ….let’s dance everyone !
Blue Minor by Sonny Clark – We play this one with our band. Sonny came from a small town near Pittsburgh, my home town. The head for Blue Minor is very hip, and by association, that makes us hip.
Is That All There Is? by Peggy Lee – Peggy asks the right question, and more importantly, has the correct answer. “Is that all there is, is that all there is? If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing”. Exactly.
Misty by Erroll Garner – a hometown hero, Pittsburgh pianist Erroll Garner was one of my earliest exposures to jazz. If you like octaves as much as I do, check out this tune!
Desafinado by Stan Getz and Joao Gilbertio – very sexy song, sexy players. Desafinado translates to “out of tune” in English.
My Funny Valentine by Miles Davis – at one time, this song was my morning alarm on one of those bedside CD players. I’ve never been the same.
Express Yourself by Charles Wright – simply put, a credo to live by.
Epistrophy by Thelonius Monk with John Coltrane – an epistrophe (Monk purposely spelled it wrong) is the repetition of phrases or words in a set of clauses, sentences, or poetic lines. It’s also a jazz tune that is very difficult to solo on, but clearly not for Monk and Coltrane.
For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder – this is a perfect pop song which expresses a feeling most of us search for, and hopefully find.
Let’s Get Lost by Chet Baker – Both Chet Baker’s voice and trumpet are clear, calm, raw and direct. This is small combo cool jazz at it’s best. It’s a perfect anniversary song; trust me on this one.
Exactly Like You by Ray Brown Trio – this is as good as a jazz trio gets. Ray Brown was a giant among bass players. On a personal side, we had the honor of having the drummer on this track (and album), the late Gerryck King, in our band for many years.
