Two Paddocks Riesling - 2013

About the wine

Premium Riesling

Two Paddocks Riesling is an estate grown single block selection made from fruit grown at Two Paddocks’ Redbank Vineyard situated in Earnscleugh, Central Otago. As in the vineyard, this wine was handcrafted using traditional methods and bottled early to ensure all the integrity and vitality of the wine was preserved. The soils in this block are well draining schist loam and the vines tend to thrive. Additionally the typically extreme diurnal temperatures experienced in Alexandra (Earnscleugh) between day and night are responsible for both metabolising acidity and retaining an intense flavour profile – all this really means is that we feel a drier wine style is both possible and appropriate.

Tasting Notes

Vintage Comments:

A good start to the season with healthy well balanced canes being laid on all three vineyard blocks with appropriate bud numbers, but growing then got off to a slow start with cooler than normal temperatures in late spring. The resulting bunches from the cooler spring were of average size but made up of very small berries, which regardless of clone and rootstock ripened at much the same time after a very warm and dry autumn. March was the warmest March we have on record. Additionally there was not the normal large diurnal shift this autumn tending much more to range between 5 degrees over night to 25 degrees during the day. This seemed to be the catalyst for lovely even ripening and carried on until harvest at Redbank vineyard (HQ) on the 19th April.

Winemakers Notes:

Crafted from a tiny half-hectare block at Two Paddocks Redbank Vineyard at Earnscleugh, Central Otago, which consistently produces the ripest and most intense riesling on the estate. All grapes are grown using sustainable principles, hand harvested, fermented in stainless steel with a small percentage in aged oak.

This wine displays pink grapefruit, freshly squeezed limes and spicy loquat aromatics. There is a taut mineral tension feel on the palate, elegant textural weight and very long persistence.

Reviews & Awards

Sweet mandarin and lime flower, iced peach tea and lemon aromas – quite complex with a particular mineral note. On the palate – dry with vibrant acidity with flavours of lime and lemon, crisp green apple and thyme laced elderflower – very cool! Light weight with medium length and a sweet note on the finish.
Michael Cooper's NZ Wines 2015 Buyer's Guide
Estate-grown at Earnscleugh, near Alexandra, in the Red Bank Vineyard, the 2013 vintage (4*) is a youthful wine, medium-bodied, with very good depth of citrusy, limey, slightly spicy flavours that build across the palate to a sustained, basically dry (5 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. A good food wine, it carries the dry style well.
