Two Paddocks Pinot Rosé - 2018

About the wine

The inaugural Pinot Noir Rosé for Two Paddocks - a dabble in the pink. Deliberately selected and grown for Rosé production from estate grown pinot noir vines using organic farming principles at Two Paddocks, The Last Chance Vineyard, Alexandra, Central Otago.

Hand harvested in March 2018 from the Gate Block at Last Chance Vineyard – one of, if not the most, Southern vineyard in the world. Clone 6, which we believe offers the most fruit and elegance for the style that we desire. De-stemmed at the winery and then the juice was given five days with the pigment imbuing pinot skins so that only the most delicate blush pink was extracted. Then the juice was fermented to just about bone dry and bottled early to retain all the berry fruit freshness. Only for sale in New Zealand and only via The Private Paddock Wine Club and the Two Paddocks e-shop.

Vintage Comment:
Two Paddocks 2018 harvest will be remembered as the earliest picking date on record. A warm spring that quickly turned in to a hot summer with much warmer night time temperatures than are typically experienced in Alexandra. Ideal conditions over flowering, which was a month early, began on the 20th November. Again, perfect growing conditions meant veraison also began a month early on the 20th January and then the extreme heat and dry finished abruptly on the 1st February. Cooler temperatures over February / March thankfully slowed ripening down and intensified flavour development, but harvest still began nearly a month earlier than typical on the 14th March and was over by the 11th April.

Gourmet Traveller Wine by Peter Bourne
Sumptuous
My first introduction to salmon roe was at Giraffe in Potts Point with Darren Taylor behind the stoves.  His gravlax is legendary, but the generous drop of salmon roe lifted the dish to a higher plane.  The wine match is lost in the mists of time but Taylor now caters under the Harvest banner and reprised the dish at a recent Two Paddocks Function.  The delicious pinot noir-based Rosé was a fabulous match, the wine's sumptuous red-fruited flavours, savoury profile and crisp acidity swiftly mopping up the potency of the salmon and its roe.

This has a very attractive and fresh, red-berry core with a neat and nicely cut, dry-ish finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap
