Two Paddocks PICNIC Pinot Noir - 2022

Tasting Notes

Lifted raspberry, red fruit, dark plum and violet aromatics on the nose, leads to a lithe elegantly textured mouthfeel, which shows great density, elegance and freshness.

About the Wine

Featuring the Proprietor’s Grandfather, S.E.D. Neill – Wine Merchant, on the label, Picnic is our perennial favourite – the wine to enjoy everyday and a wonderful introduction to the pleasure of Central Otago Pinot Noir.

This fruit was sourced from Two Paddock’s own estate vineyards in the Alexandra, Gibbston and Bannockburn sub-regions of Central Otago. Picnic Pinot Noir is made in a diminutive style aimed to reflect the characters that Central Otago Pinot does so very well – black and red cherry fruit, spice and a generosity that keeps you reaching for the next sip.

Vintage Comments

Spring and early summer started off well as temperatures steadily increased and regular rainfall meant soil moisture was high enabling the vines to easily access nutrients, so the vines had strong healthy early growth. February was cooler than typical though with several cold southerly fronts bringing rain, which slowed veraison and seemed to stall what was at that point heading for an early harvest. Then March was far warmer and actually surpassed February for heat accumulation - and an early harvest was back on! Harvest 2022 began on the 24/3/22 and finished on the 26/4/22.

Reviews & Awards

94 Points
Gorgeously elegant and sweetly fruited, the inviting bouquet shows dark plum, wild strawberry, olive, toasted almond and subtle spice aromas, leading to a beautifully weighted palate offering silky texture and layers of fine-grained tannins. Elegant yet brilliantly structured, finishing splendidly long and satisfying. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2032.
"Certified organic, the generous 2022 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown at Alexandra, Gibbston and Bannockburn, hand-picked and matured in French oak. The name 'Picnic' doesn't really convey its style, as this is a more substantial, ageworthy red than 'picnic' suggests. Fresh and exuberantly fruity, it is full-bodied, with very good concentration of vigorous cherry, plum and spice flavours, gently seasoned with oak, and gentle tannins. Best drinking mid-2024+."
"Bright, silken-smooth pinot noir with black cherry, blackberry, fresh herb and peppery oak flavours. Supple wine with good varietal definition. Good food wine. Reminds me of a good village Burgundy. 2023–2029."
The NZ organic wine awards are New Zealand's only wine show dedicated to organic and biodynamic wines. The awards were founded in 2014 and continue to grow each year.
