Picnic Pinot Noir - 2019

Tasting Notes

Redcurrant spicy pepper and dried herb aromatics with a fresh vibrant palate showing a rich ripe fruit profile and a soft elegant finish. Drink now and up to 6 years. This wine will drink well in its youth but has the potential to age.

About the Wine

Featuring the Proprietor’s Grandfather, S.E.D Neill – Wine Merchant, on the label, Picnic is our perennial favourite – the wine to enjoy everyday and a wonderful introduction to the pleasure of Central Otago Pinot Noir. This fruit was sourced from Two Paddock’s own vineyards in Alexandra and Gibbston and Bannockburn. Picnic Pinot Noir is made in a diminutive style aimed to reflect the characters that Central Otago Pinot does so very well – black and red cherry fruit, spice and a generosity that keeps you reaching for the next sip.

Central Otago Sub-regional composition:36% Alexandra, 46% Bannockburn, 18% Gibbston

Vintage Comments

Above average rainfall over the Winter and early Spring meant soil water remained at luxury levels for vines over the entire growing season. The Summer heat did accumulate though and shoots grew with ease without any destructive winds. Accurate leaf removal and crop thinning meant the vines had a balanced crop load and the fruit was very clean. A noticeable benefit was the lack of wind damaged shoots and leaves which really increases the vines ability to produce energy late into the season.

Hand harvested, 89% de-stemmed and given 5-7 days pre-fermentation cold maceration. After an indigenous ferment the wine is given another 5-7 days post ferment time on skins. Wine is then transferred to 1-4 year old French medium toast barriques (4% new oak) for a 9 month maturation in predominantly older oak, before racking and bottling.

Reviews & Awards

94 points
"Sweetly ripe and elegantly complex with dark cherry, mixed spice, toasted almond and smoked game nuances, the wine offering plump mouthfeel and silken texture, well supported by fine-grained tannins. Beautifully composed and harmonious with a lengthy delectable finish. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2027."
"Attractive, modern style with toasty oak, plenty of spice and light flinty reduction, across bright red cherries and plums. The palate has a very succulent, open and easygoing feel with bright, fresh and supple tannins. Drink now. Screw cap."
"Certified organic, the 2019 vintage (4*) was estate-grown at Bannockburn (46 per cent), Alexandra (36 per cent) and Gibbston (18 per cent), hand-picked and matured for nine months in mostly seasoned French oak barriques (4 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling, sweet-fruited and supple, with very good depth of vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, nutty oak adding complexity, and plenty of drink-young charm."
