The Last Chance Pinot Noir - 2020

Tasting Notes

A beguiling complex nose showing wild thyme, red fruit and a mix of spicy blackberry and plum aromatics. This gives way to a plush fully textured palate weight giving generous amounts of flavour built on an elegant, fresh and feminine framework, great tension and poise.

About the Wine

“We grow our premium Two Paddocks Pinot Noir entirely on our four small vineyards in Central Otago. In some exceptional vintages, listening carefully, we realize that one of these sites may have something extraordinary to say in its own right. It is only then that we will make one of these very rare single vineyard wines.”

Sam Neill, Proprietor

The Last Chance is a beautifully sited two-hectare terrace perched in bright clear air above the Earnscleugh Valley, carefully planted with well-tended Burgundian clone pinot noir. It nestles amongst a small cluster of the World’s most southerly vineyards and takes its name from the watercourse that runs through its heart, hand dug by gold miners in the 1860s, The Last Chance. Soils are raw schist gravels that are low in fertility and require careful nurturing.

Vintage Comments

A dry cold 2019 winter continued into a dry spring that was dominated some severe wind and snow events. The critical flowering month of December was still relatively cool and experienced 50mm of rain over three days. As a result, flowering was both late and drawn out. Finally, the summer heat arrived in mid-January and lasted until mid-March but the critical cell division stage for the berries was also cool and along with the challenging conditions at flowering, resulted in crop levels being 30-40% down in many of the vineyard blocks.

There were two pieces of very good news though – the smaller bunches and small berries were much easier for the vines to fully ripen in late summer and ultimately resulted in densely coloured, aromatic wines. 2020 harvest was also one of the most compact that Two Paddocks has seen starting on the 6th of April and all done by the 24th April. The Last Chance was harvested on the 8th of April.

Reviews & Awards

"Estate-grown at Alexandra, the youthful 2020 vintage (4.5*) was hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barriques. Ruby hued, it is a gentle, medium-bodied, savoury red, with moderately concentrated, slightly herbal flavours, showing excellent vibrancy, delicacy and complexity, fresh acidity and supple tannins. Best drinking mid-2024+. Certified organic."
The NZ organic wine awards are New Zealand's only wine show dedicated to organic and biodynamic wines. The awards were founded in 2014 and continue to grow each year.
"Elegant pinot noir with an attractive floral/red rose petal character together with black cherry, cacao and anise/spice flavours. Accessible wine with impressive purity and a lingering finish. Should develop well with bottle age." - Bob Campbell, MW
"This has fantastic concentration and complexity. Earthy notes of bark, dried herbs, salty mushrooms and nori marry ripe red and purple berry fruit. Sleek and refined with well-integrated tannins. There's a peppery freshness shining through. Savory and long. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
