First Paddock

This, our first vineyard, was planted in 1993 in mainly 10 bar 5 Pinot Noir. Among these, particularly at the western end of the block, is some other Pinot clone, a more upright variety, which is slower ripening and is probably less interesting in terms of flavours. We are gradually replacing these vines with some grafted new Burgundian clones. As yet there is no phylloxera in Central Otago, but one day, inevitably, there will be. Therefore, we are looking ahead to meeting this eventuality. We are very fond of this vineyard--it is humble and small (only two-hectare), but has proved rewarding. We have built a tiny tin building on it, known as Chateau Deux Paddeaux.
